Sometimes teachers announce publicly: “𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹.” Classmates know who they are. Parents know their child has been labelled “weak.” Teachers may gradually begin expecting less from them. And eventually, the students themselves may start believing: “𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀.” This is where academic support can unintentionally become academic humiliation.
