Global parents day - June 1

GLOBAL PARENTS DAY -2024
June 1, 2024

Global Parents’ Day is celebrated on the 1st of June each year to honor parents and promote family bonds.

2024 THEME: The Promise of Playful Parenting

Ideas for celebrating this special day in Educational Institutions:

¹INVOLVE PARENTS IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES: Most schools celebrate Global Parents’ Day by inviting parents to participate in school events.

²ORGANIZE FUN CONTESTS, games, art exhibitions, and other activities where parents can engage with their children and other students.

³CREATE A FAMILY ALBUM DISPLAY: Set up an exhibition showcasing students’ family albums or scrapbooks. Parents can contribute photos, memories, and stories. It’s a great way to celebrate family bonds and share cherished moments.

⁴SWEET TREATS AND REFRESHMENTS: Arrange a small treat for parents and students. It could be a simple tea or coffee session, or even a potluck where parents bring homemade snacks. Food brings people together!

⁵APPRECIATION LETTERS: Encourage students to write heartfelt letters or cards to their parents. Expressing gratitude and appreciation is a wonderful way to celebrate Parents’ Day.

⁶PARENT-TEACHER INTERACTION: Organize a session where parents can meet teachers and discuss their child’s progress. It’s an opportunity for parents to actively engage in their child’s education.

HISTORY OF GLOBAL DAY OF PARENTS

It was during the 1980s when the United Nations brought their attention to the aspects and issues surrounding the family. A request was made to enhance the awareness of the problems and needs of the family and how to effectively meet those needs. This was seen in the resolution on the role of the family in the development process of the Commission for Social Development on the recommendations of the Economic and Social Council, in 1983.

Then, later in 1989, the International Year of the Family was proclaimed to be the year of 1994. And then again in 1993, the General Assembly named May 15 to be celebrated as the ‘International Day of Families’, every year.

After almost two decades, in 2012, the General Assembly then decided June 1 to be celebrated as Global Day of Parents to share respect and appreciation for parents all around the world.
