𝗔𝗖𝗔𝗗𝗘𝗠𝗜𝗖 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗣 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗲 A student scores 32% in Mathematics. Another struggles to read at grade level. A third has failed Science twice. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀? Their names are placed on a “Weak Students List.” They are called for extra classes. Sometimes teachers announce publicly: “𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹.” Classmates know who they are. Parents know their child has been labelled “weak.” Teachers may gradually begin expecting less from them. And eventually, the students themselves may start believing: “𝗠𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗲 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀.” This is where academic support can unintentionally become academic humiliation.
