INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES – DECEMBER 3

INTRODUCTION

The International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is observed on December 3 to promote understanding of disability issues and to support the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The day highlights inclusion, accessibility, and equal opportunities in education, employment, and society.

OBJECTIVES

• Promote inclusion and respect for persons with disabilities.
• Spread awareness about different types of disabilities.
• Encourage schools to adopt accessible and supportive practices.
• Celebrate the talents and achievements of differently abled individuals.
• Promote empathy, kindness, and equal rights.

PRIMARY SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

• Storytelling on kindness and treating everyone equally.
• Drawing activity: “Everyone is Special.”
• Simple sign language introduction (letters A–Z).
• Role-play on helping others.
• Picture-based activity to understand abilities and differences.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

• Poster-making: “Inclusion for All.”
• Screening short videos on disability awareness.
• Group discussion on empathy and acceptance.
• Making Braille name cards using chart paper.
• Creating ramps or simple accessibility models.

HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

• Awareness session on physical, visual, hearing, and learning disabilities.
• Skit on inclusion in school and community.
• Making communication boards for nonverbal individuals.
• Debate: “Is society doing enough for disability inclusion?”
• Peer support volunteer pledge.

COLLEGE STUDENTS ACTIVITIES

• Expert talk by disability advocates or special educators.
• Campus audit to identify accessibility gaps.
• Project presentations on assistive technologies.
• Awareness rally with messages on inclusion.
• Sign language workshop led by trained faculty/NGOs.

NURSING & MEDICAL STUDENTS

• Seminar on rehabilitation, therapy, and early intervention.
• Case studies on care for persons with disabilities.
• Counseling skills workshop focusing on empathy.
• Community visit to interact with persons with disabilities.
• Volunteering in rehabilitation centres.

SCHOOL & COMMUNITY INITIATIVES

• Inclusive Talent Show featuring all types of abilities.
• Exhibition on assistive devices (wheelchair, Braille tools, hearing aids).
• Accessibility improvement drive in school.
• Parents’ awareness session on supporting children with special needs.
• Collaboration with special schools and disability NGOs.
