World Ocean Day June 8
World Ocean Day Celebration at Schools
June 8
ACTIVITIES
(World Ocean Day is observed annually on June 8th. The UN theme for 2025 is "Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us.")
๐Awareness & Education:
Classroom discussions on the importance of oceans (producing oxygen, regulating climate, providing food, biodiversity).
Talks by marine conservationists or environmental experts (in-person or virtual).
Presentations or documentaries on marine life, ocean ecosystems, and threats like plastic pollution and overfishing.
Interactive sessions on how daily actions impact oceans, even far from the coast.
๐Hands-on Conservation Activities:
"Ocean Clean-up" simulation: Students collect "litter" (pre-placed paper scraps, plastic bits) in a designated area to understand pollution's impact.
Beach or riverbank clean-up (if feasible and safe, with proper supervision and permissions).
Workshops on reducing single-use plastics and promoting reusable alternatives.
Creating "upcycled ocean art" using plastic waste collected.
๐Creative Expression & Engagement:
Poster-making and slogan-writing competitions on ocean conservation, "Wonder," or protecting marine life.
Art and craft activities creating ocean-themed creatures or ecosystems from recycled materials.
Essays, poems, or short stories about the ocean's beauty, its wonders, or the need for its protection.
Skits or role-plays depicting challenges faced by marine life or human efforts in ocean conservation.
Ocean-themed quizzes and games (e.g., identifying marine animals, ocean facts trivia).
๐Promoting Sustainable Habits:
Pledge-taking ceremony for students and staff to commit to ocean-friendly habits (e.g., avoiding microbeads, reducing plastic, responsible seafood choices).
Discussions on the importance of sustainable seafood and understanding marine food chains.
Encouraging water conservation, as excessive water use can lead to more wastewater impacting waterways.
๐Community & Outreach:
Displaying student artwork and messages about ocean conservation in school corridors or public areas.
Sharing key ocean facts and conservation tips with families and the wider community.
Encouraging students to learn more about local marine life and conservation efforts, even if inland.
Organizing a "Blue Day" where students and staff wear blue to show support for the oceans.
