1 October is International Coffee Day. Celebrate with the 77 Member States of the ICO and dozens of coffee associations from around the world.

International Coffee Day is a celebration of the coffee sector’s diversity, quality and passion. It is an opportunity for coffee lovers to share their love of the beverage and support the millions of farmers whose livelihoods depend on the aromatic crop.

Many countries around the world celebrate their own national coffee days at various dates throughout the year. In March 2014, the Member States of the ICO agreed to organize International Coffee Day on 1 October to create a single day of celebration for coffee lovers around the world.

On International Coffee Day 2024, the International Coffee Organization Invites the Coffee Sector to Embrace Collaboration for Collective Action with the Message: ‘Coffee, Your Daily Ritual, Our Shared Journey”

In 2023, the International Coffee Organization (ICO) launched the #CoffeePeople campaign in partnership with ILO (International Labour Organization), a collaborative effort aimed at promoting safer and healthier working conditions for coffee workers globally.

The campaign, officially launched on International Coffee Day (1 October 2023), was embraced by the International Coffee Organization (ICO), with its Council designating “Joining forces for a safer coffee supply chain” as the official theme of its 2023 promotional activities.

The campaign emphasized several key messages:

1. Every coffee worker deserves a safe and healthy workplace.

2. Work-related injuries and diseases in coffee production are preventable.

3. Safe working conditions are essential for decent work.

4. Recognizing gender perspectives is crucial, given that 70% of coffee labourers are women.

5. Collective action and social dialogue are necessary to find solutions.

Celebrating International Coffee Day in schools can be a great way to educate students about the cultural, historical, and social significance of coffee, while also having some fun. Here are some ideas to get you started:

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗨𝗟𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗟𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗢𝗡𝗦
Organize a special class or assembly where students can learn about the history of coffee, its origins, and its cultural significance around the world. You can include interesting facts and stories about coffee’s journey from Ethiopia to becoming a global beverage.

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗦
Encourage students to create art projects using coffee as a medium. They can paint with coffee, make coffee-scented candles, or create coffee-themed collages. This can be a fun and creative way to explore the sensory aspects of coffee.

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗧𝗔𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘
Set up a coffee tasting station where students can smell and taste different types of coffee beans (decaffeinated options for younger students). Discuss the different flavors, aromas, and textures. This can be paired with a lesson on how coffee is grown and processed.

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗦𝗛𝗢𝗣𝗦
Host workshops on the environmental impact of coffee production and the importance of sustainable practices. Discuss topics like fair trade, organic farming, and the impact of coffee on local communities. This can help students understand the broader implications of their consumption choices.

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗠𝗘𝗗 𝗚𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗤𝗨𝗜𝗭𝗭𝗘𝗦
Create fun and educational games or quizzes about coffee. This can include trivia questions about coffee history, geography, and science. You can also organize a coffee bean counting contest or a coffee-themed scavenger hunt.

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘
Introduce students to famous literary works and quotes that mention coffee. You can have a reading session where students read excerpts from books, poems, or essays that celebrate coffee. This can be a great way to combine literature and cultural studies.

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗜𝗣𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚
Invite students and teachers to share their favorite coffee-related recipes. This can include coffee-flavored desserts, drinks, or even savory dishes. Compile these recipes into a school coffee cookbook that can be shared with everyone.

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗦𝗖𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗦
Conduct science experiments that involve coffee. For example, you can explore the chemistry of coffee brewing, test the acidity of different coffee types, or study the effects of caffeine on the human body. This can make science lessons more engaging and relevant.

𝗖𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗘𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗥𝗧 𝗘𝗫𝗛𝗜𝗕𝗜𝗧𝗦
Set up an exhibit showcasing coffee-related art, photographs, and artifacts. Students can contribute their own creations or research and present information about coffee’s role in different cultures and societies.

Organize a community coffee morning where parents, teachers, and students can come together to enjoy coffee and snacks. This can be a great opportunity to build community spirit and celebrate the day together.

These activities can help students appreciate the rich history and cultural significance of coffee while also promoting creativity, sustainability, and community engagement.
